Welcome to Diverse Hamilton Online!
About this Site
ICAA with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage through Canada Culture Online (Gateway Fund), is proud to introduce this new web-based information site. Diverse Hamilton Online includes the art, culture, traditions, crafts, stories, values and other forms of expression of the residing immigrant population in Hamilton. The Hamilton and area community consists of more than 30 diverse and
unique cultures, religions and people from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Each community group represents their own values and culture. Each group
has their own favorite artists, singers, writers and poets that other
Canadians may not know about them. These cultures, arts, artists, and
musicians would be of vital interest to other communities as well. The
life and struggle of these culturally diverse individuals and communities
are examples of how to survive, create and at the same time believe
in the prosperity, friendship, and harmony among human beings, no matter
which religion or ethnic group they belong to. ICAA will build bridges
between the Canadian public and the newly arrived immigrants, including
immigrant youth, artists and cultural workers from round the world.
Members of any country or continent are welcomed by the ICAA to showcase
their art, music, ideas, stories, expressions, philosophies and thoughts
on this website.
This project is the result of a multi art workshop, "Colours and Sounds ",
supported by the Ontario Arts Council, in which immigrant artists, musicians,
sculptors and other art media workers joined together from December
2004 to February 2005 to discuss the future of immigrant art and the
contributions of the immigrant values and cultural expressions in the
greater Hamilton area.
The 4-session workshop discussed different approaches and methods
for better integration of immigrant families and their cultural needs
to the Canadian society. The workshop was also focused on the expressions
of women and youth as newly arrived immigrants in Canada.
The workshop covered the following topics:
- Inter ethnical dialogue and education of diverse communities; their culture, art and traditions.
- Connection and participation among different ethno-cultural groups in order to share the values and world cultural heritage with Canadians.
- Sharing experiences and stories of immigrant professionals.
- Artistic expression of immigrants.
The Diverse Hamilton website has been created to address these topics.
