Biography
Ashtar took her art lessons in Iraq. She is a new immigrant and is interested in creating visual art and crafts based on Middle Eastern cultures and traditions.
Ashtar worked as a participant artist in a community art project entitled, "Refugee Women Reclaim Their Identity" organized by the Workers Arst and Heritage Centre (WAHC), Settlement and Integration Services Organization (SISO), Immigrant Culture and Art Association (ICAA) and McMaster University Women Studies Department (January-June 2003). The aim of the project was to explore the issues facing refugee women in Canada and to empower them to express their feelings through art and story telling. The refugee women told their stories in a fearless and friendly way. At the culmination of the project, the women created their own art work along with a joint visual art project under the supervision of Ashtar.
Ashtar shared her experiences and stories with the fellow participants of the international conference, "Refugee Women Reclaim Their Identity" and presented her art work which was highly appreciated.
Ashtar has been an active member of ICAA since its establishment. Along with her family, she participates in all the exhibitions and professional activities of ICAA.
