NATURE WALK FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT WITH GRAND MARSHALL SARAH HARMER

Join Grand Marshall Sarah Harmer, Juno Award winning singer/songwriter, for a walk along Hamilton's Waterfront Trail to raise funds and awareness for local environmental initiatives. This event also features showing's of the film "Escarpment Blues", which chronicles Harmer's I Love the Escarpment Tour, a two week journey hiking the Bruce Trail and playing concerts in support of protecting the ecological integrity of the Niagara Escarpment. The Nature Walk for Our Environment is organized by the Hamilton Naturalists' Club (HNC), Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club and other local environmental groups, with lead sponsorship from the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation and event hosting by Parks Canada. All funds raised will support local environmental projects. Walkers can designate a portion of the funds they raise to support the programs and projects of any local environmental group participating in the walk. This year's environmental focus project is paying off the mortgage on the Cartwright Nature Sanctuary, which is co-managed by the HNC and Conservation Halton. The sanctuary is part of an important natural corridor connecting the Niagara Escarpment to Cootes Paradise Marsh. It provides habitat for Species at Risk and includes a public walking trail. Starting and finishing at Parks Canada's Discovery Centre on Hamilton Harbour, the walk will follow the scenic Waterfront Trail. You will be amazed at how Hamilton's west harbour has been transformed into a wonderful people place with a healthy natural shoreline. The trail is paved and wheelchair accessible, with washroom facilities and interpretive information along the route. Walkers can choose from a 5 km route that loops at Bayfront Park or a 10 km route that includes the Desjardin Canal Fishway. There will be support stations with water located along the route and free rides on the Hamilton Waterfront Trust's unique waterfront trolleys for any walkers whose feet need a rest, or only wish to walk one-way. Walkers can check in and start any time between 8 am and 10:30 am. At noon walk participants can join Sarah Harmer for refreshments, a short program and displays by partner groups and supporters. Special screenings of "Escarpment Blues" will take place at 11 am and 1 pm. All walkers who raise $100 or more will receive thank you gifts, with special prizes for the top fundraisers. Can't make the walk? Please consider sponsoring a walker. You can also sponsor Sarah Harmer on-line. Location:   Hamilton Waterfront Trail, Hamilton, Region: Halton, Hamilton, Niagara
