Aziz Al Husainy
Interviewed by Yar Taraky
Yar. Aziz, when did you come to Canada?
Aziz. I came to Canada on November 11, 2003.
Yar. You are a relativeley a new immigrant. Your English language skills are great.
Aziz. Thank you.
Yar. Where did you study?
Aziz. I am a graduate of a Bachelor's degree program from the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad - Iraq. I graduated in 1987.
Yar. What is your sculpting style?
Aziz. I am creating impressions of samples. I am remodeling part of human body and turning it to a new impresive sculpture. I am following this style here in Canada. I did sculpt the same way in Iraq.
Yar. Once you said that you owned a gallery in Baghdad. Are you looking to open a galelry in Hamilton?
Aziz. Yes I had a gallery in Baghdad. We were selling original paintings, prints and sculptures. Before the war started, I had a relativeley successful business. I never thought of opening a gallery. Maybe I have to look at this possibility. Here in Canada the price of frames is sometimes more than the price of paintings. In addition here we have a strong tradition of limited prints. As you know an immigrant artist is not able to easliy enter the limited prints market.
Yar. Where did you exhibit your art works?
Aziz. I had exhibitions in Baghdad since 1987. I also had separate exhibitions in 1999 in the United Arab Emirates. In 2005 the Immigrant Culture and Art Assocaition organized my exhibitions.
Yar. Wish you success in your future artistic endeavours.
Aziz. Thank you Yar
